Barbara Ninke, age 84, of Huron, SD, died Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 9, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Webster Cemetery in Webster, SD, with military honors.
Visitation will be Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Barbara Ninke was born Clara Barbara Sakariason, daughter of Peter A. and Emma M. (Olson) Sakariason, on August 3, 1928, at Pierpont, SD. Barbara began life on a farm in Raritan Township where she lived until she was 3 years old when the family moved to Webster, SD. She attended Webster schools graduating from Webster High School in 1946.
At the age of 17, Barbara left home to begin nursesí training at Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN. She graduated in 1949 and worked at Fairview Hospital from 1949-1963. On October 9, 1963, Barbara enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Richards Gebaur Air Force Base outside of Kansas City, MO. She was honorably discharged on October 9, 1965, with the rank of Captain. Barbara returned to Minneapolis and worked at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina as head nurse in the surgical recovery room.
Barbara became acquainted with Ray Ninke at their 20th high school reunion (they attended high school together but didnít date each other), and neither being married before, they began dating and were married 2 years later on November 9, 1968, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bloomington, MN. They moved to Bismarck, ND, for their first married home where they lived for 4 years until Ray was transferred back to Huron, SD, where they raised their family.
In Huron Barbara was a member of Our Saviorís Lutheran Church; American Legion William Reaves Post #7; Sons of Norway; and the Peripheral Neuropathy Association.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Ray of Huron; 1 son, Greg (Jane) Ninke of Tempe, AZ; 1 daughter, Rebecca Ninke (Dave Watson) of Madison, WI; 4 grandchildren, Tanner Ninke, Alexandra Ninke, Reid Watson, and Kate Watson; 3 nephews, David (Faye) Huntington of Oregon, Glen (Donna) Huntington of Washington, and Dale Huntington of Oregon; and many beloved cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and 2 sisters, an infant, and Marie E. Huntington.
