Edward Russell Johnson, age 86, of Huron, died suddenly on Friday, November 20, 2009, at his home.
His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at Welter Funeral Home with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation with the family present will be Tuesday, November 24, from 5-8 p.m. at Welter funeral home; or one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Ed Johnson was born on April 10, 1923, to Harry and Lillian (Kutil) Johnson in Woonsocket. He attended Nielson Country School and Woonsocket High School.
Ed married Beulah Tollefson in 1942 in Pipestone MN. They had 2 children. He farmed for 15 years and served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1945-1947 during WWII. He owned Ed and Clem's Shop in Artesian, SD, where he fixed cars, trucks, tractors and welded.
On Nov 14, 1980 he married Joyce (Brooks) Bonnes in Huron. He owned and operated Johnson Construction with his son and father. He and his son spent many summers building beautiful chalets on Edelweiss Mountain in the Black Hills. He continued building and making custom picture frames until his retirement. Ed also enjoyed ocean fishing, hunting and boating.
Ed is survived by his wife, Joyce of Huron; daughter, Vicky (Joe) Zellmer of Mitchell; sister, Dorothy (Dale) Clites of Stickney, SD; two step daughters, Kris Bonnes of Huron, and Mary (Larry) Wentland of Nampa, Idaho; two step sons, Michael Bonnes of Huron, and Jerald (Edna) Bonnes of Tacoma, Washington;10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Beulah; one son Jim (Barb) Johnson of Hill City SD; one sister Betty (Randy) Lee of Falls Church VA; and one infant grandson.
