Lucille DeJong, age 95, of Huron, formerly of Esmond/Iroquois area, died Saturday, August 31, 2013, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
Her memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Iroquois preceded by private burial at Maplewood Cemetery in Iroquois.
Visitation with family present will be Tuesday, September 3, from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Lucille De Jong, daughter of Paul and Emma (Weitzel) Lorenz, was born on March 5, 1918, in Esmond, SD. She received her education at a country school near Esmond and school in Esmond, and graduating from Iroquois High School in 1936.
On April 24, 1937, Lucille married Harry DeJong, Jr. on the family farm near Esmond. They lived and farmed near Esmond until 1961 when they moved into Cavour. In 1988 Lucille moved to Iroquois. For 22 years Lucille was a cook for the Cavour School system. In 2007 she moved to SunQuest Village in Huron and became a resident of SunQuest Healthcare Center in November 2012.
Lucille was a member of Esmond United Methodist Church; Royal Neighbors; and Wheel & Deal Card Club in Iroquois.
She enjoyed her family and following all of their activities. In addition, her many interests included following professional baseball (Minnesota Twins), professional golf (Tiger Woods), word puzzles, crocheting, and cooking.
She is survived by 8 children, Milo (Barb) DeJong of Cavour, Donald (Pat) DeJong of Iroquois, Larry (Meleta) DeJong of Pierre, Darrell (Diane) DeJong of Portland, OR, Rodney (Paula) DeJong of Watertown, Ruth (Bob) Brodkorb of Wolsey, Linda (John) Venables of Forest Lake, MN, and Connie Doering of Cooperstown, ND; 25 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Vera (Leonard) Raether of De Smet, Fern Cronin of Rapid City, and Faye Fisher of Minneapolis, MN; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry, Jr. on November 12, 1967; 1 grandson, Tom DeJong; 2 brothers, Clarence Lorenz and Jabe Lorenz; and 2 brothers-in-law, William “Bud” Cronin, and Wayne Fisher.
